Calaveras County, California History + Information

Calaveras County was established in 1850 - one of the first counties of the state and originally incorporated some of which now is a part of Amador and Alpine Counties.

The area grew quickly along with the discovery of gold prospecting which began in 1848. Henry Angel had begun mining near what is now Angels Creek and soon after established the Trading Post. In just one year, over One Hundred Tents were scattered along the creek and was referred to as Angels Camp.
